How One Honors Student Turned a First-Year Seminar into an Undergraduate Career of Research

Through utilizing the small classroom experience in UHP and First-Year Seminars, Honors students are able to build connections with faculty, and future mentors, who impact their entire undergraduate research experience.

“It was a cool, crazy, unexpected, life-changing experience,” Michael P. Montgomery said with a smile on his face. He was referring to the International Hemingway Conference he attended in Paris, France, in July 2018, where he presented his research on one of Ernest Hemingway's short stories and was awarded the Frank Blake Scholarship.

Although students recognize their fourth year entails a signature work, many do not realize that “research” does not always mean lab coats and vials filled with chemicals (although sometimes it does!).

Turning Library Research into Education for All

Through exploring the mission of the research institution, Honors students are able to create projects that positively impact our campus and communities.

For her Year 3 Individually Designed Project, Danielle Fradet, Wildlife, Fish, and Conservation Biology ’20, helped curate the Pacific Flyway educational exhibit at the Museum of Wildlife and Fish Biology. Utilizing the UC Davis Peter J.
